The short answer
Choose an LED wall for big rooms, rooms you can't dim, outdoor events and anything on a stage. Choose a projector and screen for boardrooms, training rooms and breakaways, where the lights can come down and the budget is tighter.
Brightness decides most of it
An LED wall makes its own light, so it stays sharp with the room lights on, and outdoor panels hold up in daylight. A projector throws light onto a screen, so room lights and daylight wash the picture out.
If you can't dim the room, or the event runs in daylight, go LED.
Size and shape
LED walls are built from panels, so they can be almost any size and shape: wide, tall, curved, an arch, or even a walk-in tunnel like the one at the SAICA Top 35 Under 35 gala. Projection screens come in fixed sizes, and a bigger picture needs a brighter projector and more space.
Space and set-up
A projector needs a clear line to the screen. From the front, people can walk through the beam and cast shadows. From behind the screen, you need space backstage for the throw.
An LED wall stands on a ground frame or hangs from truss at the back of the stage, so it takes up very little floor space.
When a TV is enough
For a small breakaway room, a stage monitor or a side screen, a 65-inch TV on a stand is often the simplest answer. We hire those out too.
Side by side
| LED wall | Projector and screen | |
|---|---|---|
| Lit room or daylight | Stays bright | Washes out |
| Size | Any size, built from panels | Fixed screen sizes |
| Shape | Curves, arches, tunnels | A flat rectangle |
| Space | Stands or hangs at the back of the stage | Needs a clear throw, front or back |
| Best for | Stages, galas, big rooms, outdoors | Boardrooms, training rooms, breakaways |
| Cost | Higher | Lower |
You can use both
Many conferences put an LED wall in the main room and projectors in the breakaway rooms. That's how Syspro's Spark roadshow ran.
